Aboriginal Health Human Resources Initiative (AHHRI) In the 2010 Federal Budget, the government renewed its commitment to continue to address the acute shortages of First Nation, Inuit and Métis health human resources through the Aboriginal Health Human Resources Initiative (AHHRI). The AHHRI Program has been extended for a period of five years (2010-2015). The renewed AHHRI is a five-year commitment to continue to develop and implement Health Human Resource strategies that will help to fulfill the unique needs of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada in a manner that respects their diversity. The renewed AHHRI has identified two priority areas: Priority 1: Increasing the numbers of First Nations, Inuit and Metis in health human resources; Priority 2: Improving the skill levels and certification of health care workers serving First Nation and Inuit communities. Union of Ontario Indians: Health Career Promotion From 2010-2012, the Union of Ontario Indians is focusing on: * increasing the number of Anishinabek who are aware of health careers as viable career options, focusing particularly on youth awareness; and, * increasing the number of Anishinabek students entering into, and succeeding in health career studies. FREE Workshops to UOI member communities: Under the AHHRI Program the Union of Ontario Indians (UOI) has developed a variety of workshops that have been designed to spark interest in tiny tots (Junior Kindergarten) to health career exploration among high school students. The majority of the workshops are interactive which allows the students to become involved and experience what it may like to become a health care professional. A popular session with Mature Students is the workshop that offers insight into the various health career programs that the Anishinabek Educational Institute (AEI) offers such as: Pre-Health Science, Registered Practical Nursing, Paramedic and, Traditional Aboriginal Healing Methods (for further information on these programs please visit http://www.anishinabek.ca/about-the-aei.asp) To schedule a health career workshop or if you are simply looking for further information about AHHRI please feel free to contact Mindy Taylor, Aboriginal Health Human Resources Initiative Coordinator at taymin@anishinabek.ca or (705) 657-9383.
